sudo: command not found

I'm new to debian and have little experience with linux. After I installed debian 12 for running homeassistant I logged in as root to get my user account into the sudo group using usermod -aG <username> my username of course.
Then I logged in as user and issued the command sudo apt-get update and was greeted with the message -bash: sudo: command not found. I did check with groups and sudo was listed as a group my user belonged to.What did I miss?
