[Solved] Update Failure

I had not received a notification to update my system for quite some time.

When I tried to update, I received this message from synaptic (received the same message from the other 'software' app):

"E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, cannot continue."

When I try to run in terminal, I get an error telling me I need 'superuser privilege.

I use the command: 'su' then enter my password, and I receive a authentication error.

I know my password ! I have set up dozens of Linux systems over the years and have always made my root password the same as my login password.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.
