Hi all,
I have a Dell PowerEdge R230. I have added a PCIe NVMe adapter with 2 x M.2 drives. The BIOS does not support booting from NVMe drives and needs to boot from a USB memory stick. People have told me this is possible with the Clover bootloader, but I noticed that the Debian installer allows the option to install the bootloader on a USB stick. So, I tried this, but I am having issues. I'm unsure whether the server has hardware issues or if I am doing something impossible.
I have successfully installed Debian on the NVMe drives in RAID 1 mode and then set up an EFI partition on a USB stick. The Debian installer could install the bootloader, and everything claimed to be successfully installed. However, on rebooting, the server can see the USB with the boot partition but can't find any bootloader. I have looked at the USB stick, and there's nothing on there. I'm a bit surprised. I expected to see some files on the USB stick.
Below is the partition table, as shown precisely in the partition setup of the installer. sda contains the installer, while sdb is the intended location of the bootloader.
I would greatly appreciate your advice & guidance.
Solution:
- Don't mix-up your installer and boot sticks and format the wrong one.
- Create two partitions on your boot stick, one EFI and one /boot.
- Insert the boot stick in an USB socket that the computer supports booting from. The boot stick was in an USB socket that didn't have boot support, but the Debian installer didn't have any problems installing to. Moving the boot stick to another USB socket worked.
